What happened

Vojvodina, RS

Wildfires have burned for more than two weeks in the Deliblato Sands nature reserve in Serbia, affecting more than 3,500 hectares and prompting an international firefighting response.

Wildfires have been burning for more than two weeks in and around the Deliblato Sands Special Nature Reserve in Serbia. More than 3,500 hectares have been affected.

Strong winds, difficult conditions and terrain that ground crews struggle to reach have made the fires hard to contain. Serbia requested international assistance on 21 August 2026 through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The European Union responded within hours, sending firefighting helicopters from a shared reserve along with ground teams and vehicles from Germany and Romania. Satellite mapping of the affected area had already been activated earlier in the month.

Current situation

Firefighting continues with international support: four firefighting helicopters drawn from Czechia, Romania and Slovakia, 55 firefighters and 24 vehicles from Germany, and 69 firefighters and 15 vehicles from Romania. Crews are working in windy conditions across terrain that is difficult to reach from the ground.

Pray for

  • For the firefighters working long shifts in dangerous conditions
  • For crews arriving from other countries to help, and for their safety
  • For families living near the fire line
  • For a change in the wind, and for rain
  • For the recovery of a landscape that has burned for weeks
