Up to 500 French schools shut as violent student protests enter a second week

What happened
Lessons will be totally or partly suspended at up to 500 high schools across France on Monday, 5 October, the education minister said, after student protests over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated buildings turned violent in places. The minister said 24 schools had been burned or ransacked since the movement began in mid-September. The interior ministry said police had made 1,949 arrests and that 305 officers had been injured.
Students, teachers and families across France are living through school closures, blockades and clashes, as a movement that began over classroom conditions has turned violent in places.
