Typhoon Champi sweeps past Taiwan, killing one and injuring hundreds

What happened
Typhoon Champi, at one point a super typhoon and one of the strongest storms of the year, swept past Taiwan’s north-east on 23 and 24 October. A man was swept away by waves on a beach on Liuqiu island and died, and at least 350 people were injured, most of them lightly, Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center said on the evening of 23 October; later reports put the number of injured above 500. About 1,750 people were evacuated from landslide-prone areas of New Taipei and Yilan, around 138,000 households lost power and more than 3,600 incidents of damage were reported. Schools and businesses closed across the island and hundreds of flights were cancelled as the storm moved north towards China and Japan.
Families in Taiwan are mourning a man swept out to sea, and hundreds of people are recovering from injuries after Typhoon Champi lashed the island.
