What happened
Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the spring overnight into 30 September, with drones and missiles aimed mainly at Kyiv and the surrounding region. Ukrainian officials said seven people were killed, among them a 14-year-old in Vyshhorod, and emergency power cuts were imposed in Kyiv and three nearby regions for the first time since the spring. The strikes have continued: a drone hit a school in Kyiv on 1 October, and on 2 October strikes killed one person and closed two bridges over the Dnipro.
Families across Ukraine are mourning those killed, and millions face the coming winter with their power and heating under attack.
