What happened
At least 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims, were killed after midnight on 3 October when a truck driver tried to overtake another truck and collided with vehicles including a minibus carrying the pilgrims, in the Salama area on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, about 90 km southeast of Nairobi, police said. The pilgrims, from St Mathias Mulumba parish in Mikindani, Mombasa, were travelling to the National Prayer Day at the shrine in Subukia.
A parish community in Mombasa is mourning pilgrims who died on their way to a day of national prayer.
