Prison riot in Mexico’s Sinaloa kills at least 10, including a visiting child

What happened
A riot at El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, killed at least 10 people and injured 16 on Thursday, 8 October, authorities said. Nine of the dead were inmates and one was a child visiting with family; the violence broke out during visiting hours and inmates used firearms. Two more inmates were reported killed in a second clash on Friday. Federal forces have reinforced security, visits have been suspended, and President Claudia Sheinbaum said security in Sinaloa’s prisons would be strengthened.
Families gathered outside the prison gates after the riot, asking for information about their relatives inside.
