What happened

Luzon, PH

Successive tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon have brought weeks of flooding to the Philippines, affecting around 7.5 million people and forcing thousands of families into evacuation centres.

The southwest monsoon, known locally as the habagat, has combined with a succession of tropical cyclones to bring sustained heavy rain and widespread flooding across the Philippines through August 2026.

The national disaster agency reports around 7.5 million people — some 2.2 million families — affected across many regions, with Luzon worst hit. Dozens of landslides have been recorded, most of them in the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Calabarzon and Mimaropa.

Eighty-eight cities and municipalities have been placed under a state of calamity. Power, water and communications have been interrupted in affected areas, and damage to infrastructure runs into billions of pesos.

Current situation

Around 9,900 families — roughly 34,000 people — are sheltering in evacuation centres. The national disaster agency has recorded 29 reported deaths, 19 injuries and three people missing; these figures remain subject to official field validation and have risen as reports are confirmed. Agricultural losses are already counted in the billions of pesos. Civil defence authorities have warned that an approaching tropical storm may worsen conditions, with renewed flooding and landslides possible while the monsoon season is still under way.

Pray for

  • For families whose homes have flooded, and those sheltering in evacuation centres
  • For communities hit by landslides, and for people searching for the missing
  • For those grieving, including families whose losses are still being confirmed
  • For children out of school and away from home
  • For rescue workers, and for safety as the monsoon season continues
