Mine and gun attack on a military convoy in Nigeria’s Borno kills at least 15

What happened
A pickup truck carrying troops struck a mine on the road between Gamboru Ngala and the border with Cameroon, in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno state, on Saturday, 17 October, and gunmen then opened fire on a second vehicle, killing at least 15 people, 10 soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, a local militia that fights alongside the army, two soldiers told Reuters. Six wounded soldiers were taken to hospital in Maiduguri. The soldiers blamed Boko Haram; the army did not comment. A military report cited by Nigerian media put the number of soldiers killed in the blast at nine. Days later, Nigeria’s army chief visited troops in Borno.
Families in north-eastern Nigeria are mourning soldiers and local volunteers killed when their convoy was attacked on a border road.
