Magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Tibet’s Nagqu kills at least 16

What happened
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Maru township in Baqen County, in the Nagqu area of China’s Tibet region, at 10:33 pm local time on Thursday, 22 October, killing at least 16 people, state media said. Official media later put the number injured at 54, among them 11 in serious condition; the first count was 32. At least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds collapsed in the remote, high-altitude area, the Nagqu media office said, and residents fled their homes as aftershocks followed. More than 1,600 people and the regional fire and rescue service were deployed to search damaged buildings, and tents and prefabricated shelters were sent in. It was the strongest earthquake to hit China since January 2024.
Families in a remote corner of Tibet are mourning at least 16 people killed when a powerful earthquake brought down hundreds of homes at night, and many are now sheltering in tents.
