What happened
Torrential rain flooded Istanbul on 14 and 15 October, the heaviest rainfall since records began in 1942, and the death toll has risen to eight, among them a teenage boy, Istanbul’s governor, Davut Gül, said on 19 October. The toll includes people from neighbouring Kocaeli province, and one person is still missing. Water flooded homes, businesses and hospitals, roads and underpasses caved in and schools were closed. In Sarıyer, the hardest-hit district, about 3,000 homes and business premises were badly damaged.
Families in Istanbul are mourning eight people killed as floodwater swept through the city.
