What happened

Hebron, West Bank, PS

Two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli army position at a checkpoint outside Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, on the morning of Friday, 23 October, killing two Israeli soldiers and lightly wounding three others, the Israeli military said; both gunmen were shot dead by Israeli troops. The four deaths counted here are the two soldiers and the two gunmen. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a closure of Hebron and a military operation that he said would include house-to-house searches and demolitions. Israeli forces have since sealed off neighbourhoods of the city and demolished homes, and at least 2,000 Palestinians have been forced to leave: the Associated Press reported about 2,000 displaced, and Hebron’s municipality more than 2,200, including nearly 300 children. The head of the municipality said about 1,300 more people may be forced out. The operation is continuing days before Israel’s general election on 27 October.

Families in Hebron have been forced from their homes, and two Israeli families are mourning soldiers killed at a checkpoint, as violence deepens in the occupied West Bank.
