Intercommunal clashes kill 71 in South Sudan’s Rumbek

What happened
At least 71 people were killed when armed civilians attacked the town of Rumbek, capital of South Sudan’s Lakes State, before dawn on Friday, 9 October, the government said. Witnesses told AFP the fighting was driven by ethnic and community conflict, and that attackers briefly took parts of the town before reinforcements arrived. Four soldiers were among the dead. Security forces say they have regained control, have arrested four people and have urged calm to prevent revenge attacks. The toll has not been independently verified.
Families in Rumbek are burying their dead and fear that the killing could spread through revenge attacks.
