Houthi missile strike on a Yemeni army training camp in Shabwa kills at least 50 recruits

What happened
Ballistic missiles fired by Yemen’s Houthi movement struck the Al-Alam military camp in Jardan district, north of Ataq in Yemen’s southern Shabwa province, on Monday, 19 October, while new recruits were training there, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 200, local authorities said. Some reports put the toll at 53, and officials warned that it could rise. The most seriously wounded were taken to hospitals in neighbouring Hadramout and in Aden. The Houthis said they had targeted the camp. The attack came two weeks into a government offensive against Houthi-held territory.
Families in southern Yemen are mourning young recruits killed at a training camp, and hospitals are struggling to care for more than 200 wounded.
