Gunmen kill seven at a church funeral in Jordan’s Karak

What happened
Masked gunmen opened fire on a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak governorate about 180 kilometres south of Amman, on Friday, 23 October, killing seven people and wounding at least 40, Jordanian authorities said. Between 150 and 200 people were in and around the church; witnesses said the attackers fired for several minutes before fleeing by car. Twenty-seven of the wounded were treated in hospital and two were in critical condition. No group has claimed the attack and the gunmen are still being sought. Jordan’s prime minister blamed extremist ideology, and the government declared three days of national mourning.
A Christian community in southern Jordan is mourning seven people shot dead while they gathered to bury one of their own, and dozens more are being treated for their wounds.
