What happened
Gunmen on motorcycles attacked camps of the Daoussahak community in the Tagadayat area near Tinabaw, about 50 kilometres from the town of Ménaka in north-eastern Mali, on the evening of Sunday, 18 October, shooting people and burning homes and killing at least 48 civilians, among them children and older people, an official and community leaders said. Security and community sources first put the toll at more than 40. Community representatives blamed the Islamic State group’s Sahel affiliate; no group has claimed the attack. Families fled towards Ménaka, and community leaders appealed for urgent humanitarian help.
Families of the Daoussahak community in north-eastern Mali are mourning dozens of people killed in their camps, and survivors have fled with almost nothing.
