Gunmen kill at least 12 in an attack on two passenger buses near Niger’s Agadez

What happened
Gunmen in three vehicles stopped two passenger buses of the SONITRAV company on the road between Arlit and Agadez, about 35 kilometres from Agadez in northern Niger, at around 10:20 am on Tuesday, 20 October, and opened fire on the travellers, killing at least 12 people, among them a soldier, and injuring about 10, the Agadez governor said. The first count was 11. The attackers fled; no group has claimed the attack, and regional authorities said it may have been aimed at gold being carried on one of the buses. The governor presided over a ceremony for the dead on 21 October, and an investigation is under way.
Families in northern Niger are mourning at least 12 travellers shot dead when gunmen attacked their buses on the road to Agadez.
