What happened
Floods in the Likouala department of the Republic of the Congo have submerged the town of Epéna and 15 villages around it, and 42,847 people in Epéna district have been declared affected, ministers told an interministerial meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Jean Jacques Bouya in Brazzaville on 20 October. The first official count, on 14 October, was 16,739 people. Parts of Impfondo, the departmental capital, are also beginning to flood. The government has set up a crisis cell under the prime minister and plans an airlift to Impfondo to bring in aid and move families to a safe site, with military helicopters supporting humanitarian and health teams. No deaths have been reported.
Thousands of families in the north of the Republic of the Congo have watched floodwater fill their homes and villages, and many are waiting to be moved to safety.
