What happened
Three days of heavy rain from a cold front flooded southern Veracruz, in eastern Mexico, from 18 October. In the early hours of Monday, 19 October, a landslide brought a wall down onto a house in Villa Allende, Coatzacoalcos, killing four women of one family. In Las Choapas, six members of another family died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a petrol generator they ran indoors after more than a day without power. Governor Rocío Nahle confirmed the 10 deaths; Mexico’s federal civil protection agency counts four in its own tally, and some local outlets report an eleventh, a driver swept away by floodwater. The Coatzacoalcos and Aguadulcita rivers overflowed, Nanchital was left almost entirely under water, the governor said 58 of the state’s 212 municipalities were affected, and more than 300 people were in temporary shelters.
Families in southern Veracruz are mourning ten people, among them children, and many more families are cleaning up after floodwater ruined their belongings.
