What happened
At least 52 civilians were killed during three days of heavy fighting around Alamata in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, hospital sources told the BBC, with artillery reportedly striking homes and a market. Federal troops appear to have taken the town and are pushing north towards Mekelle, and the fighting has spread to the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions. Explosions were heard in Addis Ababa on 1 October, and Ethiopia and Eritrea cut diplomatic ties, raising fears of a return to full-scale war.
Families in Tigray are mourning civilians killed in the fighting, hospitals are treating hundreds of wounded, and communities across northern Ethiopia fear a return to war.
