What happened
Fighting broke out on 21 October in Moyale, a town on Ethiopia’s border with Kenya, and has killed at least nine people over several days, a local hospital official said; about 30 wounded people, many hurt by heavy weapons, were admitted to hospital. At least hundreds of people have fled across the border into Kenya’s Marsabit County, mainly women and children, Kenyan officials and the Kenya Red Cross said; one estimate puts the number at about 2,500, and the Red Cross says the exact number is not yet known. Many are staying with relatives in villages on the Kenyan side, and the Kenya Red Cross has begun an emergency response. Local media link the clashes to a regional flag dispute; the cause has not been independently established.
Families in Moyale are mourning people killed in days of fighting, and hundreds of women and children have fled across the border into Kenya with little but what they could carry.
