El Niño rains flood coastal Ecuador, killing three and affecting more than 28,000 people

What happened
Heavy rains linked to El Niño have flooded much of Ecuador since mid-October, and by 22 October had killed three people and affected 28,172, the national risk-management secretariat (SNGR) said. Two people died on 18 October when a landslide buried a home at a mining camp in Camilo Ponce Enríquez, Azuay, and a woman was swept away by a river in Pasaje, El Oro. More than 6,100 homes were damaged and 20 destroyed, and eleven rivers and estuaries overflowed in Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos, Esmeraldas and Zamora Chinchipe. Forecasters expect El Niño to strengthen into the end of the year.
Families across coastal Ecuador are mourning three people killed by the rains, and thousands more are living with flooded homes and fields.
