Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake and Tsunami Strike Eastern Indonesia

BNPB / Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority
What happened
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Flores in eastern Indonesia on 15 August 2026, triggering a tsunami. More than a hundred people have been killed, over sixteen hundred injured, and more than seventy-seven thousand homes damaged.
It struck off the coast of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara, and triggered a tsunami with a recorded maximum height of about 1.6 metres.
Homes, schools, health facilities and places of worship were damaged across the affected regencies. Aftershocks continued in the days that followed and hampered rescue work, and road damage made some areas difficult to reach.
Some 185,113 people are living away from home across seven regencies. That number is still rising rather than falling: thousands more left in the most recent daily count, because continuing aftershocks are keeping families out of houses that are damaged, and out of houses they no longer trust.
