What happened
An open-pit gold mine collapsed on Monday, 19 October, in a remote rural area of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, in Colombia’s south-western Nariño department, killing at least six miners, a regional disaster official said. Another 12 to 15 miners were reported missing, and some reports put the death toll at nine or more. About 30 people were believed to have been at the site, which the governor described as informal. Rescue teams struggled to reach the area because of the difficult terrain and the presence of armed groups.
Families in a remote corner of Colombia are waiting for news of miners buried when a gold mine collapsed.
