What happened
A boat carrying 27 people sank about 140 miles (225 kilometres) west of Ensenada, off Mexico’s Baja California coast, in the early hours of Friday, 16 October, after a distress call. The US Coast Guard, helped by the US and Mexican navies, rescued 16 people, at least three of them with injuries consistent with shark bites. The search for the 11 people still missing was called off on 18 October. The survivors were Mexican nationals, Mexico’s consulate said. Only debris was found, in an area the Coast Guard said is used by smugglers.
Families in Mexico are waiting for news of eleven people lost at sea after their boat went down off Baja California.
