Millions Face Severe Hunger in Somalia

What happened
Six million people in Somalia are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, and around 1.8 million children are expected to need treatment for acute malnutrition this year.
Somalia is in the grip of a severe hunger crisis. Integrated Food Security Phase Classification analysis places six million people — around 31 per cent of the population analysed — in Crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity between April and June 2026, including 1.9 million people in Emergency.
Around 1.8 million children aged between six months and five years are expected to suffer acute malnutrition across 2026, including roughly 483,000 children with severe acute malnutrition, the form that most urgently threatens a child’s life.
The deterioration has been driven by poor seasonal rains, sharp rises in food prices, currency depreciation, and displacement caused by conflict. Reductions in humanitarian funding have compounded it.

Current situation
One district, Burhakaba, has been classified at the most extreme level for acute malnutrition and is assessed as at risk of famine under a plausible worst-case scenario. Famine has not been declared. Aid agencies have warned that funding shortfalls are leaving children without access to treatment at the moment they most need it.

- For families displaced from their homes and living far from help
- For rain, and for harvests that hold
- For aid to reach the districts where need is greatest, especially Burhakaba
